Trigger points are areas located within a muscle that can cause extreme tenderness and referred pain due to chronic inflammation. They develop either as a result of direct trauma or constant overuse of the muscle. These points have been likened to knots tied in a rope, which works to shorten the rope and lessen the use of it. When you have a muscle “tied up in knots”, it is not fully usable, because stretching it only adds to the pain. As if that pain wasn’t enough, trigger points may also cause referred pain in distant areas, making it hard to determine where the problem is actually located.
The word Neuromuscular means “of or relating to nerves and muscles”. Neuromuscular Therapy is designed to tend to the muscle and its trigger point issues, which is why it is also sometimes called Trigger Point Therapy. A therapist trained in this type of massage will apply firm pressure directly onto the affected muscle and hold it for one or two minutes to soften, or loosen, the muscle fibers. After the fibers are loosened, blood flow is stimulated into the area (which was previously deprived of adequate blood and oxygen) to promote healing and relieve pain. As you might expect, there will be some pain during this procedure, and the client should communicate with the therapist to keep pain at a very low level. The pain should fade shortly after the trigger point is released. Mild soreness may persist for a few hours, which may be alleviated with topical pain medication or ice therapy. Then you can enjoy your improved range of motion.
With proper follow-up exercises, along with adjustments to your everyday patterns of walking, sitting, standing, exercising, etc., you should be able to keep the knot out of your treated muscle for a long time. However, knowing the tendency of that muscle or muscle group to want to tighten, you might consider having routine massage therapy to keep it loosened and pliable.
